Introduction
  • The new company law makes it compulsory for both - an Indian as well as a foreign director of every Indian company to have a Digital Signature Certificate.
  • A DSC is the electronic counterpart of the hand-written signature. It establishes the unique identity of an individual. If an individual signs any digital document with DSC, he cannot step back or deny the terms of the document later.
  • A DSC is more authentic and secures a way to electronically send the data, messages, files and documents electronically, which makes it faster and easier as well.

Types of Digital Signature Certificate

There are 3 types of Digital Signature Certificates i.e. Class-1, Class-2, and Class-3.
Each has its own significance depending upon the security, profession, and sectors of industry where it is applicable.
  • CLASS 2: PAN encrypted DSC for Income Tax return filing /MCA21/ E-fillings/ ROC /etc.
  • CLASS 3 (Signing): For Travel agents / IATA Members /Tour Operators / E-Tendering / TAAI Members / Air & Railway Ticketing Agents etc.
  • CLASS 3 (Encryption): Encryption is a mechanism by which a message/information is transformed to ensure the complete privacy between the sender and recipient of information  e.g. it is used For E-Tendering etc.
  • CLASS 3 (DGFT) DSC for Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) users, EXIM (Class- III b)

Components of a Digital Signature Certificate

  • Your public key:
 The public key is provided as a part of the verification process and is available to everyone.
  • Your name and e-mail address:
It is very relevant as it enables the viewer to access your basic information and identity.
  • The expiration date of the public key:
 This part of the signature is used to set a shelf life and to ensures that a signature cannot be misused for a prolonged period.
This section identifies the company that the signature belongs to.
  • A serial number of the Digital ID:
This section helps in tracking and provides additional uniqueness to the signature making the identification, even more, easier.
  • The digital signature of the CA (Certification Authority):
This section deals with the signature of the authority that has issued you the signature.

Use of Digital Signature Certificate

  • DSC makes it easier to log into the website as the trouble of entering the username and password is saved.
  • DSC ensures that the user is who he/she claims to be by means of verification and validation. This method uses one point of authentication and combines the user's credential to the digital certificate.
  • DSC ensures Authenticity, reliability, and confidentiality as messages can only be read by authorized intended recipients. Digital certificates also verify date and time so that no dispute arise regarding the time and date of sending and receiving it.

Validity period of a DSC

  • The Certifying Authorities are authorized to issue a Digital Signature Certificate with a validity of one or two years.
